Stripes to start Trophy commitments against Spartans

by Ayrton Galea - 1st December 2014

Birkirkara FC will be opening their Malta FA Trophy Knock-Out commitments this Wednesday when they take on the Second-Division side, Hamrun Spartans FC in the third round of the competition.

The trophy has been missing for six years from Birkirkara trophy-cabinet, and they are considered as one of the main contenders for the second most prestigious honour in local football.

On Sunday afternoon, thanks to a very satisfactory second-half performance, Birkirkara recovered from one goal down, to beat Zebbug Rangers with a 3-1 result. The Stripes' goals were scored by Rafael Ledesma, Ellinton Morais and Edmond Agius, with the latter scoring the first goal with our Club.

On the other hand, Hamrun Spartans, who were relegated to the second division are occupying the second place with twenty-two points from nine matches, two points under leaders San Gwann. Hamrun have so far won seven matches, drew once and lost one match.

The U*BET FA Trophy Final of 2008 was the highlight in the clashes between two sides in this competition, when the Stripes scored a last minute goal to win the final with a score of 2-1.

However, in their last meeting in this competition, it was the Spartans who made it through with a shock win, when they defeated the Stripes with a 3-2 score in the 2011-2012 season.

The match will be played at the Centenary Stadium and is scheduled to kick off at 20:00.

Come on the Stripes!
