Birkirkara and Tarxien the spoils in goal-less draw

by Ayrton Galea - 29th November 2010

Birkirkara dropped another two points yesterday afternoon when they were held in another draw, in a goal-less match against Tarxien Rainbows.

'The Stripes' dominated most of the match but once again the forward line lost several golden opportunities which denied Birkirkara from winning the match or at least scoring.

On a more positive note, this was the second consecutive clean sheet for yellow-reds as once again the rear guard was fully concentrated.

Birkirkara lacked Nikola Vukanac and Trevor Cilia with the latter being included as a substitute although he was not 100% fit.

'The Stripes'opened on a more aggressive note but it was the 'Rainbows' who managed to create their first attempt as a long distance shot by Orosco Anonam on the 19th minute was neutralized by the Scottish goalkeeper, Michael Fraser.

On the 27th minute, Tarxien made their second attempt with another shot from outside the box by Ricardo Costa.

Three minutes later, Daniel Mariano Bueno had a diagonal shot ending wide.

Birkirkara almost took the lead when Karl Pulo had a golden opportunity, but his powerful shot from an ideal position ended wide.

On the 44th minute, Beuno was in action once again as his scissors kick ended wide.

The first half ended in a goal-less draw.

The second half saw Birkirkara go all out for the win and they dominated the whole half and they could have easily scored more than once.

Birkirkara almost took the lead thanks to the Argentine Emiliano Lattes, after a lack of communication between the goalkeeper David Cassar and Luke Vella, but the latter some how managed to clear the danger.

On the 60th minute a counter attack by Daniel Mariano Bueno exchanged the ball with Cristiano Dos Santos Rodrigues who had his shot cleared by a defender after advancing into the area.

Michael Galea was unlucky to have his shot cleared off by a defender after being served by Karl Pulo.

On the 74th minute, Mr. Zammit made two changes with the aim to score a gaol. He included Terence Vella, who replaced Karl Pulo, and Simon Zahra, who took the place of the youngster Rowen Muscat.

Birkirkara went close once again on the 78th minute when off a fine free-kick by the international player Shaun Bajada, both Michael Galea and Terence Vella failed to connect with the ball.

Terence Vella did the impossible on the 80th minute when he hit high from a very close range to deny Birkirkara the lead after being served by Emiliano Lattes.

Mr. Zammit made his last substitution on the 84th minute when Trevor Cilia, who was returning for 'The Stripes' after two matches, replaced Michael Galea.

Paul Fenech tried his luck with a direct free-kick which was neutralized by David Cassar on the 85th minute.

One minute on time, Tarxien Rainbows almost notched the winner when Orosco Anonam had his close range effort cleared off the goal line by Patrick Borg.

Emiliano Lattes was voted as the player of the match.

Thanks to this point, Birkirkara levelled points with Marsaxlokk who both are sharing the fourth place. They are one point ahead of Hamrun Spartans with the latter having a game in hand, and they will be involved next Wednesday against current leaders Valletta.
