Matteo Desira Buttigieg was born on the 7 August 1993. He plays as a forward and he joined our Club in the 2015 Summer Transfer Market.

Matteo is an up-and-coming young forward who enjoys great technique and is always found at the right time at the right place inside the box. His skills and goal-scoring abilities had established him as one of the most promising forwards in Maltese football.

He started his football career at a young age with Hibernians. During Hibernians, he spent a successful spell where he won the Under-15’s League with the Paolites before at the age of sixteen; he joined St. Andrew’s on a permanent move.

With St. Andrew’s, Matteo established himself as one of the most lethal forwards of his age as he ended-up the team’s top-scorer for three consecutive years in the Youths League. His improvement awarded him a regular place with the Saints and he helped his team to seal the promotion for the Premier League as he ended-up the fourth best scorer of the division and the team’s best scorer.

In the 2015 Summer Transfer Market, there was a number of Clubs who were willing to sign the promising forward but it was Birkirkara, who at the end of the Summer Transfer Market, signed Desira Buttigieg on a five-year contract on Friday, 28 August.

However, as part of the deal and for the best of Matteo to remain a regular player and gain experience in the BOV Premier League, he was loaned to his former Club St. Andrew’s FC. During the 2015-2016 season, he was a regular player as he played twenty-three matches and scored three goals to help his team retaining the top-division status.

During the 2016-2017 season, he returned with our Club and he was called-up for the two matches against NK Siroki Brijeg in the first qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League, but he wasn't included in both matches.
