BOV Premier League - Gzira United FC vs. Birkirkara FC

by Ayrton Galea - 8th March 2020

Birkirkara FC will be seeking to extend their positive run in the BOV Premier League when they take on Gzira United FC in a direct match this afternoon at the National Stadium (Kick-Off: 16:00).

The challenge for the three places in European competitions has heated up during the last weeks and today's match carries three crucial points that can see the Stripes back in contention in this important achievement.

Only two points separate the Stripes from the Maroons who are occupying the fifth place with thirty-two points and aided by Sirens' loss on Friday against Floriana, today's match proves to be one of the most important for both sides.

The Stripes must recover from their unlucky FA Trophy exit against Floriana and extend the positive league run that saw them winning the last league three matches. They defeated Hibernians FC with a 2-1 score in their last match.

Today's match will be the first match that the Stripes will play against their former coach, Paul Zammit. Zammit took in charge of the Maroons in the fourth week of January.

The Maroons' first victory under Zammit arrived after two defeats and a draw against Floriana before they defeated Balzan with a 3-1 score. However, they lost with a narrow 1-0 score against Valletta in their last match.

Both coaches are unable to field their best formation. Coach Andre Paus must do without the suspended duo of Enrico Pepe and Matthew Guillaumier while Coach Paul Zammit has Fernando Barbose suspended.

Gzira United won the first-round match with a 3-1 score thanks to a brace by Hamed Kone and another goal by Andrew Cohen. Federico Falcone scored the only goal for the Stripes.
