BOV Premier League - Valletta FC vs. Birkirkara FC
by Ayrton Galea - 3rd February 2019Birkirkara FC and Valletta FC will go head to head in the big match of this weekend, when they will face off in the much-awaited fixture this afternoon in a match that will be played at the National Stadium (Kick Off – 16:00).
The rivalry that dominated the Maltese football in the late 1990's and for most of the twenty-first century so far will be renewed this afternoon, when the most two successful clubs in the last twenty years will go head to head in what promises to be another big fixture in Maltese football.
The Stripes seemed to have lost the pace with the front-three in this year's league campaign, but a string of six positive results that saw them winning five and getting a draw in another match have lifted their aspirations for a place in European competitions next season.
Six points adrift from their arch-rivals Valletta, the Stripes are aware that only a victory will satisfy their expectations of securing a top-four position while keeping their slim hopes alive and kicking to challenge for the league titles.
Birkirkara will be heading to this match with a morale sky-high, following securing their place in the Quarter Final of the FA Trophy, after they came from behind to defeated Hamrun Spartans FC with a 2-1 score.
On the other hand, Valletta had an easier task to register their place in the last-eight of the second most prestigious competition on our island, when they faced BOV First Division League side, Lija Athletic FC and defeated them with a most-comfortable 7-1 score.
The Citizens have also registered five wins and a draw in their last six outings, but the are coming from five consecutive victories and they defeated Hibernians FC with a 2-1 score in their last league outing to join them on top of the table.
Sporting Director John Arne Riise has all his squad at his disposal for the exception of Ryan Scicluna who is in the final stages of his long-term injury.
Come on the Stripes!
