Match Preview: Birkirkara FC vs. Hibernians FC

by Ayrton Galea - 7th April 2018

Birkirkara FC will return to action in the BOV Premier League following the international break, when they continue to pursuit their challenge for a top-three finish as they take on Hibernians FC.

Laying in the fourth place with fourty-four points, just one point under third-placed Gzira United FC, the Stripes will be seeking to register their second consecutive victory to keep their hopes alive of returning to European football next season.

Following a goal-less draw against Valletta FC and a disappointing 3-1 defeat against Balzan FC to end the Stripes' unbeaten run of ten matches in the BOV Premier League, the Stripes returned to winning ways thanks to a 3-1 victory over Tarxien Rainbows FC.

In the victory over Tarxien Rainbows FC, offensive midfielder Jake Grech confirmed his rich form as he grabbed another two goals. The Birkirkara playmaker has now scored eleven goals in the BOV Premier League and he is the fourth best scorer overall.

On the other hand, Hibernians FC are in the sixth place and their chances to play in European football season next season looks very slim. The Paolites are six points under third-placed Gzira United FC and five under the Stripes.

After reaching an agreement with Coach Mark Miller to terminate his contract, the Paolites are under the guidance of Coach Mario Muscat assisted by their Under-19's Team Coach Eric Lia and their Women's Team Coach Neil Zarb Cousin.

Under the new set of Coaches, Hibernians suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat against Valletta FC, but they bounced back with the biggest victory in the BOV Premier League this season, as they defeated Lija Athletic FC with a massive 7-0 score.

Both teams will be unable to field their best formation. Brazilian defender Lucas Maia is suspended for the Stripes after collecting his fourth yellow card in the last match while Hibernians' midfielder Bjorn Kristensen is ruled-out injured.

Hibernians emerged as winners in the first-round match as a penalty kick converted by their top-scorer Clayton Failla was enough to secure a 1-0 victory.

The match will be played at the National Stadium and it will kick off at 18:00. Transport from Valley Road will leave at 17:00.

Come on the Stripes!
