Interview with Women Team's, Leanne Micallef
by Ayrton Galea - 25th January 2017Leanne Micallef last summer moved from Pembroke Athleta FC to Birkirkara, which is the first club she played for. In a short interview, we asked her about this move, and her thoughts about different subjects.
About the move, Leanne said,“I knew from the start that this was not going to be an easy step as the level of play is higher. Personally, I still have a long way to go and returning back to my childhood club can help me with my development in my career, and that is the reason why I accepted such a challenge.”
She went on comparing the two clubs, “I believe that Birkirkara is more serious and disciplined as a club, and it is seen clearly during training sessions, and most especially in the games. On the other hand, Pembroke had a more family oriented environment. Secondly, the fact that in the previous season I was still trying not to get relegated to the second division with my other ex-teammates, I found it hard that now suddenly I am with a team competing for first place.”
There is no doubt that one of Leanne's best assets is her versatility up-front as she can play on both wings, second striker and as a striker. She has played in all these positions this season but we have asked her about her favourite role. She said “I prefer to play on the wing, the reason being that this has been my second consecutive year playing in that position, and so that is where I feel the most comfortable. At the end of the day as a team player, I am ready to give my all where it is needed.”
The winger praised the team for their last match against Mgarr United FC. “We played as one unit, where one encouraged the other. We poured our hearts out into that game, which led to a great result. It is still important to keep our feet on the ground as there is still a long way to go.”
Leanne continued, “Coming back after a series of injuries was a drawback as the physical fitness I had gained throughout the previous weeks was lost, however I am honoured to have contributed in such game and was part of the win, and will make my outmost to continue and improve from this match onwards. “
The Stripes' next match is today against Kirkop United. Leanne commented, “Personally, I believe that as a team they have improved their ability to play football and it is not going to be an easy match. It is important to stay focused, and play each game like it is the last, not taking anything for granted.”
When asked about the possibility of winning the league, Leanne said “It would be a privilege as it would be my first honour, especially when you will see that all the hard work done is finally paying off. However, I just take it game by game, and try to give my all in each game. There is still a long way to go, because at the end of the day, the tide may turn.”
We concluded this interview by asking Leanne about her ambitions. She said, “To improve on my development as a player, whilst enjoying this beautiful game. I just take everything day by day.”
