by Ivan Mizzi - 4th January 2016Birkirkara FC have reached an agreement with Balzan FC to swap midfielders Paul Fenech and Edison Bilbao Zarate on a permanent basis. This swap will mean that Fenech joins Balzan, while Zarate will be joining Birkirkara FC. Zarate has signed a two and a half year contract just a few moments ago.
The Stripes started the January Transfer Window by completing their first major signing. Zarate is considered among the best foreign midfielders on our island, who had spells with Qormi and his last club Balzan respectively. He is mostly known for his hard work in midfield and his leadership abilities on the field.
Edison was brought to Malta by Qormi in the 2011-2012 season where he had an excellent season. He made twenty-seven appearances, all from the start and scored six goals. In the following season he moved to the New York Cosmos before joining Balzan last season. This season, he had fifteen appearances and scored one goal.
On the other hand, Paul Fenech, joined our Club in the 2007 Summer Transfer Market from Msida SJ when he had signed a five-year contract. With our shirt, he established himself as one of the best midfielders on our island where he is also a regular player in the Maltese National Team.
During his nine-year adventure with our Club, He made 231 appearances in the BOV Premier League and he scored twenty-four goals. He won two BOV Premier League titles, two FA Trophies, two Super Cups and once the Euro Challenge Cup, while he won the MFA Best Player of the Year in 2013.
We would like to welcome Zarate with our Club while thanking Paul Fenech for his service.
