Maryrose Cardona relies on team's effort
by Ayrton Galea - 7th December 2014Having patrolled the left side-back in style in the first seven matches of the BOV Women's League, Maryrose Cardona crowned her performances with a wonderful strike in the last match victory against Sliema Wanderers, and we spoke with her before next Tuesday's match against Raiders FC.
The Stripes had a superb start in the league as they are with maximum points from the first seven matches and they are enjoying a two-point lead over Raiders FC. We asked Mary what has been the secret so far and she told us, “The secret so far is that we're giving our best. We're giving everything in training. We are united and we are like a family.”
This year's league format has certainly produced the challenge of the team's attitude in facing different level of opponents. Following a very intense match against Mgarr, the Stripes found no problem to defeat the newly-formed Sliema Wanders with a 10-0 score to register their second biggest win. Despite these situations, Mary praised the team's attitude. “We always prepare in the same way for every match. We take every match as a final and we get down on the pitch with the attitude of playing against the best opponent. The match against Sliema certainly wasn't the most entertaining one for the supporters, but we walked away with what matters the most - the three points.”
As the match was ten minutes away from half-time, Maryrose struck a wonderful in-swinging strike to open her scoring account this season, certainly a reward for her latest excellent displays. She told us, “Since last season wasn't the best one, the recent performances and the goal meant a lot. This goal gives me a lot of motivation to continue building on my performances.”
There will be another stern test for the Stripes this Tuesday when they will be involved in the top of the table clash against Raiders. Raiders are the other unbeaten side in the league, dropping only two points in a goal-less match against Mgarr United. Mary said “The match against Raiders is a decisive match to see who will be at the top of the table. We're expecting Raiders to give us a difficult match, especially when considering that they are going to challenge for the league as well.”
Yet the league is certainly not won in a match or two. We asked Maryrose how much she believes that the squad can be crowned as Champions at the end of the season. She said, “Of course I believe in winning the league title. I believe that together we can achieve our targets. We need to continue working hard like we're doing, because we're all working together for the same target, and we believe all in each other.”
In conclusion Mary said, “First of all, I want to thank my mother for all her support. Secondly, I would like to thank all the Birkirkara supporters as this year we have a constant number of supporters. Keep on supporting us because we're working together that this year we celebrate together.
