Rachel had her last training session with our Club on Wednesday evening. The promising youngster who also forms part of the Maltese Women's National Team signed a one year contract with the Cypriot Club.
Apollon Ladies FC were founded in 2007 and they soon established themselves as the top women's team in Cyprus. In fact, since 2009, they won six consecutive championships. They also won the knock-out six times and the Super Cup four times. In Europe, they managed to reach the Round of 32 in the UEFA Women's Champions League over the past four years. In the qualifying round of the UEFA Women's Champions League which will be held next month, Apollon will be playing in a group together with Gintra of Lithuania, KI of Iceland and KS Vllaznia of Albania.
Rachel began football with the San Gwann Nursery and at the age of just twelve years old, she joined our Club. During her ten-year spell with Birkirkara FC, Rachel established herself as one of the best players in Women's football and she is one of the few Women players that managed to win all that Women's Football can offer locally. With the Stripes, she won five league titles, twelve Knockouts' and the Super Cup four times. She also played in the UEFA Women's Champions League three times.
Following this step, we talked with Rachel about her decision. She said “I am looking forward for the challenge. It's something I always dreamt of and finally, to achieve this dream is an indescribable feeling. The adventure is going to be an emotional one, because its the first time I'm leaving home. I have to be alone but it's going to be an experience I won't forget.Everything will pass and things will get better. Playing football abroad was always my dream.”
Rachel thanked her close friends, “I would like to thank everyone for their support, especially to my close friends. I hope that I can make Malta and my loved ones proud!”
Birkirkara FC's Women's team coach, Mr. Johann Scicluna showed his satisfaction that a promising player like Cuschieri will be making a step forward in her career. He told us, “Rachel received the best possible result for all her sacrifice during the last years. Due to her work commitments she used to train in the morning and than head to no less than twelve hour of work. This is the best possible result for Rachel, this is first step that she can take in her career to play abroad.”
He added , “Her technique shines in her characteristics. My work was only to mature her game and her momentum of work during the game. I can say that all the players will miss her. However, we will promise to remain strong and we will try our best to win the league and dedicate it to her.”
We would like to thank Rachel for her brilliant services towards our Club while wishing her all the best of luck in her new adventure.
