Women's Team to start Knock-out commitments

by Ayrton Galea - 16th May 2013

Birkirkara Women's Team won the Championship in a dramatic way in their last league fixture against Mosta. The confirmed champions will now turn their focus on the Women's Knock-out, as their commitments will start tomorrow evening, when they will be involved in a match against Pembroke.

The Birkirkara clan might be still wondering what could have been a better reward for all their efforts and sacrifices throughout the whole league campaign, than notching the winning goal on the 93rd minute, which handed the title to the Stripes for the second time, after beating Mosta with a solitary goal last Tuesday in the last league fixture.

Pembroke's league campaign was also somehow satisfactory, despite ending in the Relegation Pool. Pembroke ended in the 6th place in the Women's League standings, eleven points under Relegation Pool leaders Mgarr United and twelve points over relegated Tarxien Rainbows who were relegated with Hamrun Spartans.

Since Birkirkara were finalists in last year's edition, they were awarded a bye to the Quarter Final, while Pembroke begin their commitments from the first round in this competition. They eliminated Raiders with a 5-1 score before advancing to this stage of the knock-out.

Birkirkara and Pembroke met twice in the league campaign and both encounters were easily won by the Stripes with trashing 8-0 and 9-0 scores. However, these comfortable scores count nothing for tomorrow's match, as football has a habit of shocking especially in knock-out competitions, as has happened in the past.

The Stripes will be a depleted side once again as Maryrose Cardona, Stephania Farrugia and Kelly Agius Pace are suspended while Rachel Cuschieri is doubtful for this match.

The match will be played at the Sirens Grounds, at St. Paul's Bay, and is scheduled to kick off at 20:15.

Come on the Stripes!
