Under 15s Beaten by Leaders San Gwann
by Jonathan Spiteri - 25th April 2013Birkirkara Under 15s were beaten in the Section B top of the table clash with San Gwann 4-1. A defeat which leaves our boys with no more margin of error in their quest to secure the second placing in the rankings, which means promotion to Section A. Thanks to this win San Gwann have mathematically secured top spot and will be promoted as champions of Section B.
The Stripes seemed to be more determined to go infront in the initial stages of the game. After a few seconds they missed a glorious opportunity to do so as a shot by Ryan Muscat was inches wide. Birkirkara continued to press and managed to win a freekick from which the same Muscat brought the best out of the San Gwann goalkeeper. The first half wore on in total equilibrium from then on and as everyone was expecting the teams to go for the break goal less, San Gwann struck three minutes from half time thanks to the concession of two penalties in quick succession, which, frankly, were quite debatable. The first one was scored, but the second one was missed.
During half time the players were encouraged to keep up the good work, as they were doing quite well in not making the absence of a few regular first team players being noticed. Luck was not on their side though as the Saints managed to double the score early in the second half from a corner kick situation. Here the inexperience of those players who do not play on a regular basis came to haunt Birkirkara, as two soft goals made the score 4-0, leaving no route back into the match. To their credit though, the YellowReds kept on trying and did in fact score a consolation goal in the last fifteen minutes to make the score 4-1. This goal was scored by substitute Gianluca Zammit, and was the right reward following some great one-touch football by our boys on the left flank. This 4-1 defeat gave the opportunity to promotion candidates Qormi to leapfrog Birkirkara in second place having a two point advantage, but Birkirkara have a game in hand. All games are now ‘must-win' affairs.
Coach Mr Charles Micallef knew this was the most difficult match, apart from the director encounter with Qormi in a few weeks time, and is disappointed that his team ended up empty handed. “Although the result was harsh on us I want to thank all the boys who did their best and worked as usuall for this important game. We had to pay the price for the attitude of some players in our previous game and will sure be a good lesson to all. This game will not affect us for the coming games and we must work harder together to make up for our mistakes. “. The next commitment for the Under 15s is on Saturday 27th April versus Rabat Ajax at 13:00. The game will be played at the Mellieha Grounds.
