Birkirkara Under 15s Beat Attard
by Jonathan Spiteri - 18th February 2013Birkirkara Under 15s did the double on their Attard counterparts when they beat them 3-1 at the Santa Lucia Grounds on Sunday. This win was imperative to keep the promotion aspirations alive, and also to kick-off the second round commitments on a positive note.
The match was the last one for Nick Borg, who will be leaving the Island for Germany, and from here we wish him good luck. His team mates surely did their utmost to give him the best farewell possible. On the other hand, Ryan Muscat was marking his debut after joining from Hamrun Spartans during the transfer window. Coach Carmel Micallef had to do without three regular players, but those introduced in their place gave a good account of themselves as the team gave a good all round performance and came out deservedly on top.
Although the Stripes had most of the ball, and despite a series of corners and free kicks in attacking positions, the score till half time remained goal less. The second half was a different story though, as Birkirkara seized the lead when Nick Borg headed past the Attard custodian, thus scoring on his last match for the Nursery. A few minutes later, the referee ordered a free kick in favour of Attard, from which our opponentes levelled the score. Our boys were not deterred by this unexpected goal, and rolled up their sleaves in search of a goal that would give them a new lead. This arrived when Ryan Gauci had a magnificent headed effort partially saved by the goalkeeper and he followed up the rebound to put the ball in the back of the net. The YellowReds sealed the issue with a third goal when substitute Owen Amato, who came on for Roberto Curmi, with the latter had a fine performance till then, showed great skill when shifting the ball to the left channel where he found the unmarked Ryan Muscat who hammered the ball home. This was a debut goal for Muscat. Birkirkara then controlled the match to end up worthy 3-1 winners.
Coach Mr Micallef will surely demand more of the same to his boys, as he was please with their efforts and the outcome of the game: “Following our last performance against Tarxien the boys continued to show supremacy on the pitch. I want to praise all the boys for their effort and commitment and mostly for showing great endurance and concentration which helped us achieve this positive result. Well done!”
Birkirkara Under 15s will have to wait until the 17th of March for their next league match, which will be agains Pembroke Athleta at the Siggiewi Grounds, kick off 9.00am.
