Late equaliser denies Birkirkara U16 girls
by Ayrton Galea - 17th December 2012A late equaliser by an unfortunate own goal denied the Birkirkara under 16 Girls team to reduce the gap with Pembroke when in an entertaining match they shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw.
With Pembroke and Mosta leading the table six points ahead of Birkirkara, ‘The Stripes' went all out for the win, and they were so near but yet so far as an own goal in the dying minutes denied Birkirkara the three points and the reward for such a great performance.
The first half saw both sides having early goal scoring opportunities with Janice Xuereb blocking the attempts comfortably. For Birkirkara, hard working Alishia Sultana, Raina Giusti and Kelly Groves were all creating problems for Pembroke's defensive line. Raina Giusti made all the difference in the first half as she puts Birkirkara in the lead with a wonderful volley which gave the goalkeeper no chance.
In the second half, in an unlucky situation, a Birkirkara defender headed past goalkeeper Janice Xuereb to equalise for Pembroke. However, Birkirkara's reaction was quick, and in the late stages of the match, Raina Giusti rounded a defender before her shot hit hard past the goalkeeper. The drama was not over yet as another unfortunate goal restored equilibrium for Pembroke who remain six points clear of Birkirkara. A positive note in the match was the return of Rebecca Bonnici following a long-term injury.
