Birkirkara, Mosta aiming for AME Cup final

by Ayrton Galea - 2nd August 2012

Group A winners Birkirkara will face Mosta, the runners-up of Group B, in the semi-final of the AME Cup which will be played this evening.

Many are expecting this to be an entertaining match as these two teams are considered as two of the strongest teams in the competition, especially considering their new signings and the latest results.

In Group A, Birkirkara took the top spot as they maintained a perfect streak with three wins. In all three matches, Birkirkara were on the losing side, but they managed to turn the match around to emerge as winners.

Following wins of 4-2 and 3-2 against Sliema Wanderers and Qormi respectively, in the last match of the group, Birkirkara gave another great showing. After being down by one goal, Birkirkara finished with a comfortable win of 4-1 against Rabat Ajax.

On the other hand, Mosta who were in Group B ended in the second place with six points after they won twice and were defeated once. They ended level points with Balzan Youths but the latter won the group thanks to the direct clash result.

Mosta beat Hamrun Spartans in their first match with a 3-1 score but Balzan Youths beat then with a score of 4-2 in the second match. Mosta also ended their group commitments in style, as they registered a 5-1 win over Tarxien Rainbows.

Spanish central defender Alejandro Mendoza Corujo, who arrived Malta last Tuesday for a fifteen-day trial with our Club, is expected to make his first appearance. Brazilian duo Jhonnattan Da Conceicao and Jusselio Donizete, and Serbian midfielder Zoran Vuckovic are still on trial with our Club.

Today's match will be played at the Luxol Stadium and it is scheduled to kick off at 18:30. The other semi-final, between Sliema Wanderers and Balzan Youths, will follow. Transport for today's match will leave at 18:00 from Valley Road, Birkirkara.

Irrelevant of today's result Birkirkara will be involved in their last match of the competition on Sunday. If they manage to beat Mosta, they will take part in the final, which kicks off at 20:30. If today Birkirkara end on the losing side, they will be involved in the match for the third and fourth place on Sunday at 18:30.

Come on the Stripes!
