Birkirkara aiming for precious points
by Ayrton Galea - 30th March 2012Birkirkara will be aiming to extend their positive run when they face Sliema Wanderers this Saturday.
There was no doubt of the squad's true potential and everyone expected that sooner or later ‘The Stripes' will show their real strength. However, what many probably did not expect was that Birkirkara remain unbeaten in the last three difficult matches, let alone winning two out the three matches to move alone in third place.
Birkirkara opened the Championship Pool phase with a 3-1 win over Floriana. Then they scored a late equaliser to hold Valletta in a 1-1 draw. In the last match Hibernians could not penetrate Birkirkara's solid defence and it Birkirkara registered an important 1-0 victory thanks to a penalty converted by substitute Jean Pierre Mifsud Triganza.
Tomorrow's opponents Sliema Wanderers began the Championship Pool on level points with Birkirkara, but they failed to keep the pace, and they are still searching for the first win. After they were defeated by Hibernians with a 2-1 score, they were held by Balzan Youths in a 3-3 draw who were playing with nine players. In their last match they were defeated by Valletta with a 2-0 score.
These two teams already met twice in the Premier League, with Sliema registering a 1-0 win twice, with Jeremy Ani scoring the decisive goal in both matches.
Following the swap deal in the last day of January, Jean Pierre Triganza for Birkirkara, and Trevor Cilia and Andrew Decesare for Sliema Wanderers, will be facing their former teams.
Birkirkara are currently third with 25 points, one ahead of Floriana and six ahead of Sliema. A win for ‘The Stripes' would practically mean game over for ‘The Blues' aspirations to end in third place. A win for Sliema will once again open wide the race for the third and fourth place.
The match will be played at the National Stadium and is scheduled to kick off at 17:00. Transport from Valley Road is available and will leave at 16:00.
The MFA has announced that the Birkirkara supporters will be seated as usual in the Enclosure West A, with the Floriana supporters. The Sliema supporters will be seated in the Millenium side D sharing the side with the Valletta supporters, who will also have Enclousere West C at their disposal for this match. The Millenium side F will be available for the neutral supporters.
Come on the Stripes!
