Interview with Andrei Agius
by Ayrton Galea - 12th May 2011Birkirkara ended their Premier League commitments, and are now preparing for a decisive match, the Semi Final of the U*BET FA Trophy. We decided that this time it was the turn of the International defender, Andrei Agius to share his views with us.
Q: What are your comments about the last match?
A: Last game was the last one of the league but our sight was already on next Sunday's semi-final. This doesn't mean we had to lose that way, but these things happen in football.
Q: Will last Friday's defeat have any effect on this Sunday's match?
A: It can have a positive or negative outcome like everything in life. It can boost us for the semi -final or it can shatter our hopes.
Q: In the last two matches against Floriana they defeated us easily, with scores of 5-1 and 3-0. In what ways do we have to improve with the aim that we qualify for the Final?
A: We have to improve in concentration as in these past games all goals were either soft goals or through mistakes.
Q: How do you feel about the final league standings?
A: I think second place was well in our reach but we left a lot of points behind. So third place is good for one thing only, and that's because the Club still goes for Europa League next season.
Q: If you had to pick our best and worst games, which games would you choose?
A: I think best game since I came was first round championship pool game against Marsaxlokk. Worst game, obviously, is against Floriana in last game of the first round of the Championship Pool.
Q: In your opinion, which was your best match?
A: I think the match against Valletta in the first round of championship pool was my best game.
Q: Throughout the whole season we saw the squad lacking from consistency which resulted in losing precious points. What were the factors that led to this problem?
A: Consistency comes with self believe and hunger for success. Only these things can lead you, as it led Birkirkara in winning last years League, and will lead them in future successes.
Q: What are your comments on Sunday's match?
A: Sunday's game for me is a game I have been waiting for all season long because I, personally never won any honours on the Island so I am very looking forward to it.
Q: Winning the FA Trophy will surely save this season from being a disappointment. Does this create extra pressure on the squad?
A: I don't think it will put extra pressure. Sometimes big challenges helped the team to find its concentration better than in other games so I should expect the squad to be ready and up for the game.
Q: You have never won anything in terms of silverware. Does this motivate you more?
A: It does for sure more then any one and my loan spell helps me more because for me this could be my only time I can achieve this.
Q: Do you believe that we can really win the Trophy?
A: Yes I do. Not only because I am a very positive person but because I am a very objective one. As I said on this website in my first weeks when I joined Birkirkara, we are second to none here in Malta. Starting from the president that personally I will take this opportunity to thank him publicly because he is one of a kind, as for coach we have the most successful coach coaching at the moment in Premier League and last but not least all of my team mates that are the best players on the island.
Q: What are your plans for the future?
A: My plans for the future are to keep on playing football abroad. This short spell with Birkirkara helped me a lot, and in a lot of ways, and I will always be thankful to all the people involved with Birkirkara FC.
Q: Do you have a message for the supporters?
A: I would like to thank them for their support, as in every game they chant my name and I am very grateful to them. I didn't like it when they left the squad alone and accused us of not respecting the team. I can assure them that every one in the dressing room respects Birkirkara Football Club and that these things happen in football. Last but not least I ask them to join forces with us now that there is no turning back. We need them as much as they need us to play for them, so I hope to see them on the stands next Sunday.
