Tomorrow: The Champions vs The Leaders
by Ayrton Galea - 4th March 2011Tomorrow Birkirkara will be involved in what many are considering a decisive game. The present Champions will face the unbeaten leaders Valletta in the third match of the Championship Pool phase.
Both teams are coming from a 1-1 draw. First Birkirkara were held by Hamrun Spartans, and in the second match of the day Valletta managed to somehow equalise thanks to a goal by Ryan Fenech.
Valletta are currently with 24 points, six more than Birkirkara who have eighteen points. Tomorrow's possible three points are extremely important for both sides. If tomorrow 'The Stripes' pick up the three points, the title race would be wide open once again but if the Citizens win this clash, the Premier League race is all but over.
The hope that for once Mr. Paul Zammit will have all his players available for his selection suffered a drawback as Rowen Muscat will be ruled-out injured with Shaun Bajada and Angus Buhagiar are doubtful. On a more positive note, Trevor Cilia is set to return after an absence of three months.
In these last ten seasons Birkirkara and Valletta met no less than 38 times in Premier League games. Valletta managed to win 16 games, and Birkirkara managed to beat Valletta 14 times. The eight other games ended in a draw. In these 38 matches, Birkirkara have a better goal difference as they scored 61 while Valletta managed to score 56. From Season 2000-2001 till 2009-2010 the biggest win for Birkirkara was on the 22nd February 2003 when 'The Stripes' trounced the Citizens with a score of 7-2. For Valletta, the biggest win against Birkirkara in this decade was with a score of 4-1.
This season Birkirkara and Valletta met twice in the Premier League. The first round ended in a 2-2 draw but in the second round Valletta managed to pick the three points as they beat Birkirkara with a score of 3-1. Many believe that the result was too tough for 'The Stripes' as they had a good performance on the day.
The match will be played at the National Stadium and it will kick-off at 16:00. Transport from Valley Road will leave at 14:30.
