Birkirkara dissapoint
by Ayrton Galea - 5th February 2011Birkirkara suffered an embarrassing loss today afternoon as they were defeated by Qormi with a score of 4-1. Qormi's new signing Michael Mifsud managed to found the net no less than three times.
Since their last promotion to the Premier Division in 2007, this was the first win ever for Qormi over Birkirkara.
This defeat arrived after two positive performances which enabled 'The Stripes' to pick up six points, but today was not the case as Birkirkara had a performance to forget especially in the rear-guard. Another drawback for 'The Stripes' was the number of goal scoring chances which they squandered.
Like in all their Premier League games this season, Birkirkara were not in full strength as Joseph Zerafa was suspended, and Trevor Cilia is still injured. The new signing for Birkirkara, Ibrahim Babatunde was not eligible for the selection of Mr. Paul Zammit as his International Transfer Clearance did not arrive in time.
The other new signing Rodolfo Kumbrevicius was making his second appearance today and he managed to score the only goal for Birkirkara.
Qormi took the lead after just thirteen minutes when Joseph Farrugia found Abubakar Bello-Osagie and the latter perfectly served Michael Mifsud who opened the score for Qormi.
Things for Birkirkara got worse when Michael Mifsud scored his second goal four minutes after, when he rounded Michael Fraser and put the ball into an empty net.
Birkirkara'r reaction to this goal was quick and on the 23rd minute they pulled one back as Emiliano Lattesm' shot was blocked by Matthew Farrugia and Rodolfo Adorno De Oliveria hit home from the rebound.
On the 40th minute, Michael Mifsud almost scored his hat-trick and from the counter attack, Paul Fenech was anticipated by Matthew Farrugia with the latter clearing the ball into safety and denying Birkirkara the equaliser.
Three minutes later, Michael Mifsud continued to be the most dangerous player on the field when manages to round the goalkeeper but his shot was anticipated by Karl Pulo who cleared the danger.
Michael Mifsud tried to make the best out of a defensive blunder and he almost scored another goal for Qormi.
The first half ended 2-1 in favor of Qormi.
In the second half 'The Stripes' showed a stong determination to equalise and take something from game.
Paul Fenech served Michael Galea and the latter's rising shot almost resulted into the equaliser but it ended a few inches wide.
Only one minute later, Michael Galea was in action again as his shot was perfectly saved by Matthew Farrugia.
Matthew Bartolo serve Michael Mifsud who hit wide on the 69th minute.
It was practically game over for Birkirkara as Michael Mifsud completed his hat-trick when he managed to beat Fraser with a powerful diagonal shot.
Paul Fenech tried to give new hope for Birkirkara on the 77th minute with a powerful shot from outside the box but it was turned into a corner kick by the Qormi custodian.
Emiliano Lattes' shot from the right ended high two minutes later.
Three became four on the 84th minute, when Angus Buhagiar handled the ball inside the penalty box, and Josue Souza Sanstos converted from the eleven meters.
With this loss, leaders Valletta extended their lead to fifteen points as today they were held by Hamrun Spartans in a 1-1 draw. Both Floriana and Tarxien Rainbows who are before Birkirkara in the league standings will be in action tomorrow.
