Interview with Michael Camilleri
by Ayrton Galea - 4th January 2011Head Coach Mr. Paul. Zammit decided to utilise new youngsters for the Christmas Cup, and we decided to interview one of them, that is, Michael Camilleri.
Michael Camilleri is not a totally new face for the senior squad, as last season he was introduced in the Premier League match against Qormi where 'The Stripes' were beating Qormi 5-2 score. However, last Sunday, Michael was selected in the first eleven against Hamrun Spartans.
The youngster opened the interview by introducing himself. "I am seventeen years old and this is my first year with the Under 19's Team. "
As we said before, this was the first time that Michael was selected in the first eleven and we asked Michael what he thought about this. "I was excited because I wanted to grab the opportunity that came my way, but my moral was good thanks to the support of my team mates."
He added, "You feel huge pressure but I feel that you need to perform well just the same to continue playing at that level."
We asked Michael if he felt that youngsters like him, are finding the opportunities they need locally. He replied, "I think that in the Maltese Premier League there are only few, if any, coaches that give youngsters opportunities like Mr. Zammit does."
Michael was asked how important support from his teammates and fans is to him, and he answered: "It is very important, fundamental even, because with a few words of encouragement you can play much better. The supporters themselves know that they are the 12th player and their support can help win a game."
In the last question, Michael was asked what does it mean for him to play for Birkirkara and he said, "To play in the Premier League when you are sixteen years old is a big honour, but to play for Birkirkara is a much bigger honour."
