Birkirkara FC and Mqabba FC share the spoils
by Ayrton Galea - 8th August 2010In a match that caused little or no excitement, Birkirkara FC and Mqabba FC shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw. As both coaches were just trying several tactics, the match level could not be one of the best although both teams created goal scoring opportunities.
The match opened on a slow tempo as both sets of players just controlled the game in the midfield with occasions of scoring being few.
The first opportunity to open the score was for Birkirkara when a perfect pass by Michael Galea found Trevor Cilia in a one versus one situation with the Mqabba's goalie. Cilia tried his luck with a lob but it ended wide.
Hardly a minute later, there was another Cilia's shot which also ended wide, after the 1st Division side goalkeeper failed to stop the ball.
On the 20th minute, Mqabba broke the deadlock when Ryan Scicluna slipped and lost the possession in the middle of the field, Claudio Calleja advanced with the ball before firing a powerful shot that beat Lovizon.
Four minutes later, Birkirkara had another good opportunity to level matters. This time it was Lattes who tried to go round the goalkeeper before slotting the ball but the goalie manage to grab the ball in the last moment.
On the 27th minute, Emiliano Lattes was in action once again. A cross from the right by Trevor Cilia found Emiliano whose shot hit the post.
On the 39th Minute, Michael Galea's freekick ended wide.
The last goal scoring opportunity for the first half was for Birkirkara, when Thomas crossed the ball to Latted but his shot ended wide.
The half time scores read 1-0 for the 1st Division side.
In the second half Birkirkara were more aggressive and in fact after just one minute they were close to equalize as Trevor's lob shot ended just on top of the net.
On the 47th minute, Emiliano tried his luck with a powerful shot from inside the box but it was blocked by a defender.
Birkirkara completed to press forward and on the 54th minute, Vukanac's shot ended wide.
On the 63 minute, Patrick Borg tried his luck with a low shot but it was neutralized by the Mqabba goalie, who was in top form.
Four minutes later, Trevor's perfect cross was met by a header which ended just a bit wide.
On the 69th minute it was Trevor's turn as his powerful shot ended wide.
A minute later, Pulo entered the box and his shot also ended a bit wide.
On the 71st minute, Bartolo performed a wonderful save that neutralized a powerful shot from outside the box.
On the 75th minute another shot by Emiliano Lattes was once again saved by the Mqabba's goalie.
On the 82th minute, Birkirkara were awarded a penalty after a handsball inside the box. Emiliano took the charge of this penalty but his effort was neutralized once again by the goalkeeper.
On the 87th minute, the goalkeeper could do nothing this time. Patrick Borg performed a good run, crossed to Karl Pulo who in turn served Michael Galea, whose scorching shot from inside the box put the ball in the net to level matters.
From then onwards, both teams were exchanging possessions in the middle of the field until the referee blew the final whistle.
