Birkirkara beat Qormi yet again
by Matthaeus Grasso - 6th March 2010Birkirkara FC have clinched three vital points this afternoon, as the 'Karkarizi' have managed to beat title contenders Qormi, with a 2-0 score line.
Missing today were Branko Nisevic and Paul Fenech, as they were both serving a one match ban, also missing was Nikola Vukanac, who wasn't fit enough for selection due to a minor injury.
Our side was by far the most dangerous team throughout the ninety minutes, and in fact, Qormi's most dangerous piece of attacking play arrived on the last minute of normal time.
Birkirkara's siege on the Qormi defence commenced on the half hour mark, when a Sylvano Comvalius free kick ended just high. Soon after, brave Qormi goalkeeper Matthew Farrugia managed to perform good saves on Michael Galea and Shaun Bajada respectively.
The first interval ended 0-0 with Angus Buhagiar receiving treatment for a facial injury he had suffered a few moments earlier..
Three minutes from the restart, a thunderbolt by Alan Tabone was miraculously turned away by Farrugia, but from the resultant corner kick, Birkirkara's highest ever goalscorer, Michael Galea, rose majestically above his marker to head-in the opening goal.
Moments later, Michael Galea could have scored again, as a free kick by Shaun Bajada passed just in front of his own eyes, but unluckily, the Birkirkara captain failed to apply the needed 'killer' kick.
Farrugia was the man of the moment again, as on the 60th minute mark, it was Trevor Cilia's turn to test the young goalkeeper.
Half the ground yelled "penalty" when Sylvano Comvalius served an unmarkerd Michael Galea, who was challenged from the back in the opposing penalty area, but much to the amusement of these same people, neither the referee nor either of his assistant signaled for the spot kick.
Things could have taken a real turn to the worse, if Qormi substitute Steve Meilak managed to make the best out of a Birkirkara defensive blunder, but this wasn't to be, as Jorge Mora performed one of his few saves of the day, when he managed to neutralize the effort with his foot.
Right on the verge of the full-time whistle, on the 94th minute mark, Trevor Cilia ran towards the opposing goal, and just right before he entered the area, ex-Valletta defender Jonathan Bondin performed a late tackle from behind. The referee had no option but to send the defender off and awarded Birkirkara a direct free kick. Up stepped George Mallia, who was marking his return from a prolonged injury, and the ex-Malta International, had no problem to slot the ball in the far left corner of Farrugia's net.
There was not much time for any goal celebrations, as the referee blew for full time just a few seconds later, so the supports gradually changed their goal chants to victory chants, as the numerous Birkirkara supporters celebrated yet another crucial victory which re-affirms the club's credentials as one of Malta's best.
