Birkirkara edge past Hamrun S.
by Matthaeus Grasso - 26th September 2009In an evenly tied contest, Birkirkara managed to edge past newly-promoted Hamrun Spartans thanks to a 2-1 scoreline.
Our side took the lead as early as the seventh minute, when the 'Spartans' defence failed to clear the ball neatly, with the ball hitting Sylvano Comvalius before rolling into the net.
With Hamrun improving their game, they equalised on twenty-five minutes, as a low shot by Gaetan Spiteri was parried away by Mora, only for the ball to reach Marcello Pereira who put the ball in the empty net.
Just before the half-time whistle, 'The Stripes' scored what proved to be the final goal of the match, as after a lovely piece of play, George Mallia ran into the box before hitting it low past Andrea Cassar.
The second-half proved to be a very boring one, with scoring opportunities being few. However, in the dying moments of the match, with the Hamrun S. players getting more and more aggresive, they came close to clinching a late equaliser through an indirect freekick.
With the referee blowing for full-time, tempers flared on the pitch, with the referee having no option but to send Manolito Micallef off.
