Good effort by the Stripes
by Matthaeus Grasso - 22nd August 2009Despite loosing 3-1 against title favorites Valletta, the Birkirkara FC players put in a fine performance which merited a more decent final score line.
Goalkeeper Jorge Mora was making his debut for our side, whilst Karl Pulo came in a second half substitute to wear the Birkirkara FC shirt for his first competitive match with his new team.
The match itself, as expected, was a close one to call, with both teams sharing possession in the first half, with Valletta being the better team in the second period.
Despite creating the most dangerous scoring opportunities, Birkirkara conceded the first goal of the match on twenty-six minutes, when Priso found an unmarked den Ouden who had the easiest of tasks in heading the ball in an empty net.
The Birkirkara FC players didn't give up hope, and in fact, on thirty-seven minutes, our side equalised thanks to a fine cross by captain Michael Galea which was met by the towering Sylvano Comvalius, who managed to beat Andrew Hogg with ease.
At half time, the controversial Ta'Qali score board read 1-1.
Just a few minutes of the second half went by, when the assistant referee on Andrew Hogg's left flagged for an inexistent offisde against Shaun Bajada, when the Birkirkara midfielder was close to get in a one-on-one situation against the Maltese international goalkeeper.
Eight minutes later, a weak cross by Steve Bezzina, was totally misjudged by Ronni Hartvig, only for the ball to reach last season's BOV Premier League top scorer, Terrence Scerri, who in a one-on-one situation against Mora, didn't miss.
Scerri scored again a few minutes later, yet again from close range, to secure the first three points of the season for the citizens.
