Unlucky 'Stripes' eliminated
by Matthaeus Grasso - 7th March 2009This year's edition of the U*Bet FA Trophy hasn't brought the luck that last year's competition did, as this year Birkirkara got eliminated in the semi-final phase with an unlucky 2-0 loss against Valletta.
Our team was the best of the two throughout the first forty-five minutes, and after a disallowed goal for Valletta due to an offside position of one their players, it was Martin Anastasi who saw his low shot beat Andrew Hogg, with the ball hitting the post and traveling in front of the Valletta goal line.
As soon as the referee was ready to blow for half-time, an Ian Zammit shot from thirty yards out was fumbled into the net by Bernard Paris, leaving the goalkeeper and the rest of the Birkirkara clan in shock.
Failing to recover from that incident, Birkirkara conceded yet again, when a Valletta counter-attack resulted in Priso slotting the ball into the net for the last and second time.
This was the mighty blow for our team, as it seemed that none of the players had the necessary power and mental strength to turn the match around.
The full-time whistle found Birkirkara eliminated from the U*Bet FA Trophy with the team's objectives turning into securing a top-three spot in the BOV Premier League.
