'We have all that it takes to win' - Yasmeen Vella

by Ayrton Galea - 13th January 2015

Birkirkara FC Women's Team player Yasmeen Vella believes that the team has all it takes to reach this year's targets. We talked with her a few hours before her team takes on Pembroke Athleta.

Yasmeen, who will turn twenty-four years old next month, has showed great improvement and she was rewarded with regular first-team selection. The Birkirkara defender has started seven matches, while she was included as a substitute twice, in nine matches.

Still delighted with the empathic 5-0 victory over Kirkop United, Yasmeen said, “I believe that determination was one of the key elements in helping us win the game. Although our opponents were not an easy target, our team worked collectively so as to win the three points for our Club.”

The Stripes will be involved in a tricky encounter this evening when they take on a motivated Pembroke side, but Yasmeen is confident in her team-mates' potential. “Match preparations differ according to our opponent, and physical preparation is held throughout the season. Tactical and mental preparations are done according to the team we will be facing during the particular week.”

She went on by saying, “With regards to the dressing room atmosphere, I strongly believe that the bond there is between us players together with our coaches make it a positive one. This helps us in our performance on the field, as we all work for each other, for one aim. For the upcoming match against Pembroke, I expect that we give a great performance as our team players have the potential to do so. I believe in every one of us, and that together we will win this match like we did in the previous ones.”

The determined defender's displays have been praised by many and she was called to the National Team. We asked Yasmeen for her reactions, and she replied by saying, “Working hard and being determined is a major element in doing your best. I think that so far I have done my best so as to help in achieving our goal. I'm satisfied with my performances but will keep working to improve myself both on a personal and team level.”

“Being called to the national team is a major personal aim for a player. Being in the national team is an honour as you will represent your country. I was further motivated to work harder, so that I will give my best to the team and improve personally in the game.”

The Stripes are considered as the main title contenders for the BOV Women's League. Yasmeen said “Our target is winning the league title and the knock- out competition. I have no doubt that Birkirkara has the potential of doing so. The team has highly skilful players, together with a very good coach, thus I think that we have all it takes to win both titles this season.”

The team's target definitely match Yasmeen's personal targets, as when she was asked about her personal objectives, she told us, “My aims are winning the league title and compete for the fifth time in the UEFA Women's Champions League. Playing against foreign countries with the national team is another aim I will be working on.

Finally, Yasmeen concluded her interview with a message for the supporters. “I think that supporters should attend women's football matches more frequently and show support to their club.”
